FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: method of liquid phase carbonization of methanol or reactive derivative thereof comprises reacting carbon monoxide with liquid reaction composition containing methanol or reactive derivative thereof, halogen promoter and rhodium catalyst system comprising rhodium component and bidentate phosphoric-sulfuric ligand. Ligand comprises dative phosphorus center attached with dative anionic sulfur center by means of substantially unreactive main chain structure including two attaching carbon atoms or attaching phosphorus atom. Present invention also describes rhodium ligand complexes of formula: [Rh(CO)L]m or [Rh(CO)LY wherein Y is halogen, m is integer of less than 10 and L is selected from the following group of bidentate phosphorus-sulfur ligands: and wherein R is independently selected from group consisting of C1-C20-alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, substituted aryl and optionally substituted aralkyl; R5 is selected from group consisting of hydrogen, C1-C20-alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, acyl and optionally substituted aralkyl; R1-R4 are independently selected from group consisting of hydrogen, C1-C20-alkyl and optionally substituted aralkyl; X is C1-C20-alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, C1-C20-alkoxy, C1-C20-alkylthio, trialkylsilyl, and n is 0-4.
