The appts. has a sensor (3) for characteristic volatile contents of vomit. Electronic circuitry (4) for signal analysis and a display unit (5) to output an alarm are associated with the sensor (3). The sensor (3), the electronics (4) and the display unit (5) may all be spatially separated. The electronics (4) are preferably arranged for quantitative analysis of the sensor signals. A microphone may be integrated into the sensor (3) and with electronics (4) for noise analysis. The display unit (5) may be an alarm unit.
