An emergency seal for ruptured fluid tanks has a grid of pipes held in place over the leak by magnets and with liquid nitrogen, or any other suitable coolant, passed through the grid to freeze the leaking liquid and finally to block the leak. The grid splits the cross section of the leak into small cross section flows which are progressively closed by the freezing process. For difficult to reach leaks, such as in ships, the grid can be lowered into the tank and is drawn onto the leakage site by the flow of liquid.
