The inventive measuring device for measuring the tread depth of an automobile tyre contains a measuring head. Said measuring head has means (130) for arranging the same in a defined position in relation to the tyre tread surface of the automobile tyre being tested. A laser and a sensor unit are mounted together in a support body (96). The laser is positioned in such a way that the laser beam (132) forms a small angle with the normal line to the tyre tread surface. This angle enables the laser beam (132) to strike the base of a tread groove in the tyre tread, where it is then able to produce a light spot. The position of the light spot can be observed using the sensor unit. A measurement value for the tread depth of the tread groove in the tyre tread can then be produced from the sensor position data by means of an image processing device. A mirror (110) is provided for re-directing the light emitted by the light spot on the base of the tread groove towards the sensor.
