The method involves arranging a measuring bar (11) parallel to a tire axle at a distance to a tire tread, and fixing a measuring bar in a circumferential position of a tire. A measuring head (12) is guided to the measuring bar over a measuring bar width in a contact-less manner. A tread depth of the tire is measured in two tracks during forward or backward movement of the measuring head from or to a starting position, respectively, where one of the tracks is laterally displaced opposite to the other track. An independent claim is also included for a measuring device for executing a method of measuring a tread depth of a tire.
