The length of each of the at least three spaced apart legs can be altered. Each legs (3) consists of an outer (4) and inner (5) tube each of which can be lengthened by a tie-rod (15) each of which is connected by at least one deflector roller (13a,b) to a shared driven pulley unit in the form of a drum. The drive mechanism, the pulley unit and at least part of the deflector rollers are positioned on a support plate fixed to the underside of the table top (2).
