The method involves transmitting an ultrasonic transmission pulse in a transmission direction (20) to the test piece (1). A first ultrasonic echo pulse (32) reflected in a first time window (36) to or from the test piece (1) is detected. The first time window (36) is set such that an expected reception time for reception of the first ultrasonic echo pulse (32) reflected from a first point (4A) lies within the window. A measured reception time point (38) of the detected first echo pulse (32) is used to determine the position of the first position (4A). To measure the position of a second point (4B) the measured reception time point (38) of the echo pulse reflected from the first point (4A) is used to set a second time window (46). The second window (46) appears for a successive detection of a second echo pulse (42) at the point of the first window.
