Production of fatty acid lower alkyl ester useful for hydrogenation to primary alcohol

In the production of 12-18 carbon fatty acid lower alkyl esters (I), (a) crude (I) is washed with water by circulating through a pipe system, with strong shear; (b) the phases are separated; and (c) the refined (I) is subjected to fractional distillation; then stages (a) and (b) are repeated, using another pipe system. In the production of 12-18 carbon (C) fatty acid lower alkyl ester (I) by catalytic ester exchange of fats and oils with lower alcohols: (a) the resultant crude (I) is circulated through a pipe system, with strong shear, and the circulating stream is mixed with 1-10 wt.% water with respect to (I); (b) part of the mixture is discharged and the organic and aqueous phases are separated; (c) the refined (I) is subjected to fractional distillation; (d) the resultant (I) fraction is circulated through another pipe system and mixed with 1-10 wt.% water; and (e) part of the mixture is discharged and the organic and aqueous phases are separated.
