An alkaline metal oxide/metal hydride battery has a negative electrode of a hydrogen storage alloy having specified contents of misch metal, nickel, cobalt, zirconium, aluminum, manganese and iron. An alkaline metal oxide/metal hydride battery has a negative electrode of a hydrogen storage alloy which is of CaCu5 type crystal structure and which has the composition Mm1-aZraNivAlwMnxCoyFez, Mm = misch metal; a = greater than 0 to 0.07; w = 0.3 to 0.6; x = 0 to 0.1; y = 0 to 0.1; z = 0.3 to 0.55; and v + w + x + y + z = 4.9 to 5.4. An Independent claim is included for production of the negative electrode described above by atomizing the molten alloy, tempering, grinding and applying optionally together with added binder onto an electrode support.
