Nanoparticles comprising a biocompatible, biodegradable polyelectrolyte complex consisting of a polycation, a polyanion and a biologically active agent are produced by crosslinking the polyelectrolyte complex during or after its formation. An Independent claim is also included for the production of the nanoparticles by combining the active agent in bound or unbound form with an aqueous polycation solution and an aqueous polyanion solution, if necessary converting the resulting polyelectrolyte complex into nanoparticulate form, and treating the nanoparticulate complex with a crosslinking agent.
