Chlorination of ketones (I) , except cyclopropyl methyl ketone, which, apart from the carbonyl group, are inert towards triarylphosphine dichlorides, is carried out with a chlorinating agent in the presence of 0.1-10 mole-% triarylphosphine oxide (II) w.r.t. (I).
