Several transmitter elements are arranged at the steering wheel (1), reflecting or self producing IR or electromagnetic beams (2). A receiver unit (3) is provided, which receives the beams emanating from the transmitting elements. A signal processor is provided, which from image sequences of the transmitting elements received successively in time, the local alteration of which is determined. From these results the direction of rotation, the angle of rotation or the rotational speed of the steering wheel is determined.
