Dirt is deflected from the side window (4) of a motor vehicle. The deflection device (8) is positioned between the external mirror (6) and the A-column of the vehicle body. The air deflector has an upper edge (12) which is free from parts affecting air flow and a deflection surface (11) which has the effect of augmenting the flow eddies occurring at the A-column. The surface is plan view is positioned at an angle of 20-45 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.
