The device comprises canisters (140,142) each having heaters and diodes. Each heater has an anode and cathode and each diode is designed in the cathode of the respective heater. A heater driver (130) has cathode and anode switching devices, the latter being paired into first and second pairs. An electrical control unit (120) outputs either a control or operating signal or a non-control or non-operating signal to a corresponding cathode switching device and a corresponding anode switching device on the basis of state data which indicate an operating state of the diesel engine in order to switch these on or off.
