Optically inactive benzo(b)furan, benzo(1,2-b:4,5-b')difuran and benzo(1,2-b:5,4-b')difuran derivatives (I), with mesogenic substituent(s), are new. Optically inactive benzo(b)furan, benzo(1,2-b:4,5-b')difuran and benzo(1,2-b:5,4-b')difuran derivatives of formula (I), with mesogenic substituent(s), are new. R1-(A1-Z1)n-A2-Z2-W (I) W = a benzofuran-2-yl group of formula (II); X1-3 = hydrogen (H), fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl) or cyano (CN); X4, X5 = H, F, Cl, CN or a 1-5 C alkyl, 1-5 C alkoxy, 2-12 C alkenyl or 2-12 C alkenyloxy group with 1 or more F substituents; one of X4 or X5 = F, Cl or CN if the other = F or CN; or X4X5 = a group, completing a benzodifuran ring system, of formula (IIIA) or (IIIB); X6, X7 = H, F, Cl or CN; or one of X6, X7 = (Z3-A3)m-R2; R1, R2 = H or optionally substituted 1-12 C alkyl or 2-12 C alkenyl; A1-3 = optionally substituted cycloaliphatic or (hetero)aromatic rings; Z1-3 = -CO-O-, -O-CO-, -CH2O-, -OCH2-, -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, -C equivalent to C- or a single bond; and m, n, (m + n) = 0, 1 or 2.
