A device for attenuating or stopping the effect of a restoring force, suitable in particular to prevent a restoring motion due to a restoring force in a training apparatus, has a braking/blocking device (10) that generates a braking force to modify the effect of the restoring force, a first element (26) upon which a working force may be applied and a second element (24) upon which the restoring force may be applied. Both elements (24, 26) are movably arranged with respect to each other against a tensioning force. Means (20, 54, 62) are provided to couple both elements (24, 26) and the braking/blocking device (10), so that means (20, 54, 62) regulate the braking force depending on the relative position of both elements (24, 26).
