An orthodontic bar fastening system, e.g. for advancing the lower jaw, consists of male (1) and female (2) components which slide one inside the other and are attached by eyelets on their ends to supports (6) made from round or oval-section metal rod covered with moulded PVC (7). The supports (6) can be in the form of sole plates which are rectangular, round or oval in shape, and the bar ends are joined to them by rotary fixings passing through the eyelets. The bars can be made at least partly from plastic, and the fastenings can hold in place by friction or by a system of engaging projections and recesses.
