A fixed casing (1), buried below street level (O), has one side compartment (4) accommodating electric and hydraulic auxiliaries, and another (6) liquid refuse tanks. Individual skips (8), normally stationed within this section, can be latched (17,18) to a mobile superstructure (5), which is then raised, by hydraulic rams, or screw jacks (13), for removal at street level. The increasing weight of each skip, as material is added through public access chutes (51), is monitored by a sensor (15) connected to a remote operations room; at a preset value the chute is locked off and collection arranged. Superstructure uprights carry public information panels, an inclined solar panel (72) providing electric power to the centre, and overhead lighting (71).
