Models the cable condition by studying and measuring the propagation of a wave on the cables electrostatic screen and not on the cable pairs. Sends a short duration electrical pulse, of set amplitude and duration into one end of the cable (1), between the cable screen (11) and the ground cover. Detects echoes and reflections from the cable fault (14). Determines position of fault from propagation time of signal to fault and back. Pulse duration is short with respect to the time necessary for its propagation along the cable. INDUSTRIAL STANDARDS - INSTRUMENTATION AND TESTING - The device is designed to detect cable faults.
