The invention relates to a method for locating faults (14) along a multi-pair metallic cable (1) comprising an electrostatic screen (11) and an external insulating sheath (10). The faults (14) are caused by an alteration of the sheath (11) and the modification of its dielectric characteristics. A pulse, preferably Gaussian, is injected between the electrostatic screen (11) and the medium (Mat) surrounding the cable (1). The faults (14) cause an electromagnetic interaction between the screen (11) and this medium (Mat), and a reflection of the wave propagating in the screen (11). The temporal analysis of the signals makes it possible to detect the presence of echoes and to locate the faults (14). The method includes modeling the cable (1) according to several standard configurations: buried cable, under pipe and overhead, depending on the physical characteristics of the environment.
