New catalysts containing a halogen and a group VIII metal supported on a treated alumina

The use of a halogenated alumina-based catalyst, containing a group VIII metal for the hydroisomerization of 4 - 8 C normal paraffins (n) to form isoparaffins (i) of high octane index for the synthesis of MTBE (methyl t-butyl ether) for incorporation in petrol fuels. The catalyst contains a halogen and a group VIII metal supported on a psi alumina or epsilon alumina. It is subjected to a high temperature water vapor and subsequently halogenated. Independent claims are also included for the preparation and use of the catalyst.
