Infant restraint car bed allowing the infant to lie on its side

A child restraint car bed comprises a shell body (12,fig. 4) with a chamber (5,fig. 4) to receive an infant; and first and second slots 44,46 extending through the shell body and communicating with the chamber. A harness assembly includes retention straps (80,fig. 8),82,84 having hook and loop end portions 86,92,94 that extend through the slots 44,46 and attach to an infant within the chamber, securing it to the shell body. The harness assembly moves laterally within the slots 44,46 to adjust to variable body positions assumed by the infant. The lower surface (42,fig. 7) of one sidewall is concave to support an infant in an on-side position and the bottom chamber surface (40,fig. 7) is substantially planar to support the child in a supine position. The shell body is held in position on the vehicle seat by a skirt flange (34,fig. 4) with retention hooks (58,68,fig. 4) which engage and retain a vehicle seat belt.
