PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively prevent malfunction by judging abnormality when the writing of a magnetic head is performed by changing a write current, and subsequently, the abnormality of the magnetic head is still detected even when this write current is changed. ;SOLUTION: A fault signal 9 is generated from a head abnormality detecting circuit 8 as a normal operation and the writing is continued ulness the fault signal 9 which is always monitored buy a control part 11 is active. Then, when the fault signal 9 becomes active, a write signal is raised outside a data area and the writing is performed at this time. If the fault signal 9 is not active, there is not problem in an open short circuit and the writing is continued even when the fault signal 9 is active in the data area. When the fault signal 9 is finally active, a writing failure, i.e., an open short-circuit failure is judged to stop the writing. Consequently, the presence/absence of erroneous detection of the circuit is confirmed by performing the writing in the area outside the data area changing the write current.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
