PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable not only the inhibition of formation of a dry sludge but also a stable long running without changing the initial reaction conditions or the aimed product qualities in the hydrogenation of a heavy oil such as a topped crude or vacuum residue. ;SOLUTION: In hydrogenating a heavy oil, an alumina catalyst supporting Ni, Mo, and W is used as the pretreatment catalyst and the mass ratio of asphaltene to resin in a product oil is kept at 1 or lower. Pref. the amt. of W (in terms of the oxide) supported by the catalyst is 1-3 mass % of it.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
