PURPOSE: To provide a method of inhibiting the generation of a dry sludge in the hydrogenation of a heavy oil. ;CONSTITUTION: A heavy oil comprising a topping residue or a vacuum distillation residue or a mixture of both is hydrogenated using a pretreatment catalyst preferably having an average pore diameter of 100-250Å, while regulating the product oil so as to have an asphaltene to resin weight ratio of 1 or lower.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
