PURPOSE:To obtain a mugwort extract having remarkably decreased contact sensitonogenicity by extracting mugwort with water, hot water or water- containing alcohol and treating the extract by a specific method. CONSTITUTION:An extract free from sensitonogenic fraction can be produced by (A) extracting mugwort with water or a water-containing alcohol, subjecting the extract to gel permeation chromatography under the designated conditions and removing the initial water effluent at a retention time of 0-25min and the 70% acetone effluent or (B) extracting mugwort with water or hot water, concentrating the extract, extracting with 50-100% water-containing alcohol and removing the insoluble components by filtration or (C) extracting mugwort with water or hot water, adding an alcohol to the extract to obtain a watercontaining alcohol having a concentration of =50%, extracting the extract and removing the insoluble components by filtration. Cosmetics compounded with the above extract exhibit excellent effects such as the prevention of skin itchiness and body smell in addition to the cure of wound, prevention of chapped skin and improvement of chapped skin.
