PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a medium where a picture sharpening program capable of sharpening in a more natural feeling is recorded, a picture sharpening device and a picture sharpening method in consideration of suppressing an undesirable picture to which a feeling of roughness is accompanied by partial sharpening though essential edge parts are made satisfactory. SOLUTION: With respect to digital picture data taken in through a digital still camera or the like, the difference between data vignetted by smoothing and original data is calculated to detect a sharpened area. Thereafter, tone curve correction and reduction are performed, and the result and data obtained by smoothing the result are synthesized to set the degree of sharpness inclination which is spread in the base and quickly emphasized on the halfway (steps 118 to 142), and completed mask data are stored in one channel of a complete unsharp mask, and the same mask data are used to subject original picture data to emphasis processing, thus performing sharpening while avoiding the state that only edges are sharpened.
