PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a medium where a picture sharpening program capable of sharpening in a more natural feeling is recorded, a picture sharpening device and a picture sharpening method in consideration of the fact that originally sharp edge parts or the like are made too sharp and that the generated picture is accompanied with a touch of unnatural artificial product. Thereafter, mask data of a non-sharp area is formed in one channel of a complete unsharp mask through tone curve correction, reduction, inversion, and smoothing processing (steps 118 to 122), and this mask data are used to subject the original picture data to strong emphasis processing, thus preventing originally sharp edge parts from being made too sharp and from giving touch of unnatural artificial product. In this case, processings for picture adjustment are included, and sharp areas are subjected to weak emphasis processing.
