PURPOSE: To provide a welding equipment and a method capable of automating welding of upper and lower square steel pipes in an abutted state. ;CONSTITUTION: Closed type rails 18 are fitted extending over the whole peripheries of the upper and lower square pipes abutted on each other. Welding carriages 30 and 34 are made to travel on these rails to weld a joining part of the upper and lower square steel pipes. At the time of performing welding of about three passes, for instance, is first performed at the same time on parts of 26a in opposition where erection pieces are not fitted of the joining part of the square steel pipes 10 and 12. At this time, ends 27 of 26a are made in a cascade state. Welding is then performed on remaining parts of 26b and further, welding is performed on parts of 26c in addition to 26a and 26b. Manpower saving of welding work and improvement of working efficiency are attained and the working quality can be maintained constant by performing above work automatically.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO&Japio
