PURPOSE: To provide the title novel compound having high nonlinear optical performance for wavelength transformation, etc., thus useful for nonlinear optical materials and nonlinear optical elements. ;CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of the formula (R is H, Cl, Br, 1-10C alkyl, 1-10C acetamide, etc.; n is 1-5, where, in case n is ≥2, R is such that the substituents adjacent to each other may form a ring; waveform bond denotes cis or trans site), for example, 16-(4¹-methoxybenzal)androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione. The present compound can be obtained, e.g. by reaction between (A) a substituted or non-substituted aldehyde (pref. 4-methoxybenzaldehyde) and (B) androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione in a solvent such as methanol pref. in the presence of sodium hydroxide at room temperature to 150°C.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
