PURPOSE:To obtain the high-contrast projection type liquid crystal display device by providing rugged parts on one or two inside surfaces of substrates holding a liquid crystal layer, thereby increasing the intensity of the backward scattering on an incident side and changing the light distribution characteristics of the forward scattering on an exit side. CONSTITUTION:The rugged parts 302 are provided on the one or two inside surfaces of the substrate 300 holding the liquid crystal layer 303.
