PURPOSE:To obtain the high-contrast projection type liquid crystal display device by providing rugged parts on one or two inside surfaces of substrates holding a liquid crystal layer, thereby increasing the intensity of the backward scattering on an incident side and changing the light distribution characteristics of the forward scattering on an exit side. CONSTITUTION:The rugged parts 302 are provided on the one or two inside surfaces of the substrate 300 holding the liquid crystal layer 303. More preferably, the rugged parts are provided by rubbing, etc., on polyimide films 302. More preferably, the rugged parts are mechanically provided on the ITO films of transparent electrodes 301. The refractive index of the high-polymer liquid crystal 303 at the time of non-selection when an electric field is not applied to the liquid crystal 303 is 1.533 and the refractive index of the polymer 304 is 1.8. Since the liquid crystal is oriented along the boundary, incident light 102 is scattered by repeating reflections. Since the refractive index of the polyimide films 302 and ITO films 301 in the rugged part is about n=1.8, the surface reflection at the boundary between the liquid crystal and the substrates is large and the light is scattered by the effect of the ruggedness, by which the backward scattering intensity is enhanced.
