PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the accurate separation and measurement of gas exchange concerning respiration and photosynthesis under environmental conditions provided for elucidating plant physiology. ;SOLUTION: The environmental atmosphere in a growth chamber 1 in which plant is placed is maintained through the use of a bag 3. CO₂ and/or O₂ gases containing a stable isotope ¹³C or ¹⁸O are introduced to the environmental atmosphere to cause the plant to respire and/or perform photosynthesis. Then gases are sampled from the inside of the growth chamber 1, and the amount of ¹²CO₂, ¹³CO₂, ¹⁶O₂, and/or ¹⁸O₂ in the sampled gases are simultaneously measured by a mass spectrometer 2.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
