PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the accurate separation and measurement of gas exchange concerning respiration and photosynthesis under environmental conditions provided for elucidating plant physiology. ;SOLUTION: The environmental atmosphere in a growth chamber 1 in which plant is placed is maintained through the use of a bag 3. CO2 and/or O2 gases containing a stable isotope 13C or 18O are introduced to the environmental atmosphere to cause the plant to respire and/or perform photosynthesis. Then gases are sampled from the inside of the growth chamber 1, and the amount of 12CO2, 13CO2, 16O2, and/or 18O2 in the sampled gases are simultaneously measured by a mass spectrometer 2.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
