PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new nematic liquid crystal compound having good optical anisotropy and induction anisotropy characteristics, exhibiting nematic liquid crystal phase in wide temperature range, usable for liquid crystal layers of liquid crystal display elements and excellent in chemical properties and heat stability. ;SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [A is formula II or formula III; R1 is a 1-12C alkyl or alkoxy, F, CN, Cl or the like; R2 is a 1-12C alkyl or alkoxy; R3 and R3' are each H or F; (n) is 1 or 2], e.g. a compound of formula IV. The compound of formula I is produced by a method obtaining a compound of formula IV, or the like, by passing through 3-(4- fluorophenyl)-6-[2-(trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl)ethyl]cyclohexyl-2-ene-1-one, trans-5-(4- fluorophenyl)-2-[(2-trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl)ethyl]cyclo-hexanone or the like by using e.g. 4-fluoroacetophenone or the like as a starting material.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
