PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which a voltage nonlinear resistor which is stable in leak current and has a long service life can be manufactured efficiently in a short time, the voltage nonlinear resistor manufactured by the method, a voltage nonlinear resistance element, and a lightning arrester provided with the element. ;SOLUTION: In a method for manufacturing voltage nonlinear resistor, the ratio of a bismuth oxide phase in the oxide bismuth phase of a sintered material composed of ZnO containing at least bismuth oxide is adjusted to 30% by irradiating the sintered material with a microwave 3 having a frequency of 30 GHz. A voltage nonlinear resistor is manufactured by this manufacturing method. A voltage nonlinear resistance element contains the resistor and a pair of conductor electrodes electrically connected to the resistor.
