PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus which controls a traction motor in a hybrid electric vehicle. SOLUTION: The control apparatus 400 of a variable speed induction motor 498 is provided with field oriented control devices 410, 476. The parameter of the motor 498 is detected, and a field error signal and a torque error signal are generated. The field error signal is processed by a first limited state PI processor 490a, and it suppresses the amplitude of the proportional component of a field voltage so as to be less than a bus voltage. The field error signal is processed also by a first state oriented integrator 426a, and the integral component of the field voltage is limited to the difference between the proportional component and the bus voltage. A first adder 432a adds the proportional component and the integral component so as to generate a field voltage command. The torque error signal is processed by a separate second limited-state PI processor 490b.
