LOW VISCOSITY, CHLORIDE-FREE AND LOW OVER BASED ALKYLARYL SULFONATE, ITS USE AS LUBRICANT ADDITIVE AND PRODUCTION OF THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as a detergent-dispersant for lubricant in a new way e.g. by neutralizing sulfonic acid with a metal salt of an alkylhydroxyl aromatic hydrocarbon having a high TBN. SOLUTION: The objective compound (e.g. a low over based alkyl sulfonate or the like) is produced by one of the following three methods: (A) neutralizing sulfonic acid with a metal salt of an alkylhydroxyl aromatic hydrocarbon having a high TBN (e.g. a sulfurized carbonized alkaline earth metal alkylphenate or the like); (B) partially neutralizing sulfonic acid with lime, followed by neutralizing sulfonic acid with a metal salt of an alkylhydroxyl aromatic hydrocarbon having high a TBN; (C) neutralizing sulfonic acid with lime, followed by treating the neutralized sulfonic acid with a metal salt of an alkylhydroxyl aromatic hydrocarbon having a high TBN. The above neutralizing processes are preferably carried out in the absence of a chloride without adding a carboxylic acid.
