PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a wire rod excellent in wire drawability and to inexpensively produce an extra fine steel wire using the wire rod as the stock and suitable for use to a steel code and a sawing wire with high productivity at a high yield. ;SOLUTION: This high carbon steel wire rod has a compsn. contg., by weight, 0.70 to 0.95% C, 0.1 to 0.5% Si, 0.1 to 0.6% Mn, ≤0.01% P, ≤0.01% S and ≤0.004% N, moreover contg. at least one kind among 0.01 to 0.08% Cu, 0.01 to 0.08% Ni, 0.01 to 0.10% Cr and 0.01 to 0.05% Mo, and the balance Fe with impurities, and in the case the elemental symbols in the formulae are defined as the contents by weight % of the elements, the value of (Cu/3)+(Ni/6)+(Cr/3)+(Mo/2) is controlled to 0.02 to 0.05%, and the value of C+(Mn/6)+(Cu/3)+(Ni/6)+(Cr/3)+(Mo/2) is controlled to 0.810 to 1.085%.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
