PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily producing the objective decomposition products in high selectivity, at a little use of a catalyst or at high space time yield, with the optional use of an acidic catalyst by subjecting a linear or cyclic acetal to reductive decomposition, in the presence of a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen, in a formate-containing aqueous medium under specific conditions. ;SOLUTION: A linear or cyclic acetal is subjected to reductive decomposition, in the presence of heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen, at a pH of less than 7 under a pressure of 0.1-30 MPa at a temperature of 200-300°C, preferably 200-280°C in a formate-containing aqueous medium, wherein the weight ratio of a hydrogenation activating metal to the acetal is less than 0.1 in the case of the operation of a suspension. Preferable examples of the catalyst to be used above are supported catalysts prepared by supporting the hydrogenation activating metal such as Ru, Rh, Pd, Pt, Cu, Cr, Fe, Co or Ni on a base of a support consisting of activated carbon or an oxide.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
