PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cordierite body having a low thermal expansion coefficient and a narrow pore size distribution width in a range of 10 μm. ;SOLUTION: This cordierite body is obtained by blending a talc having a particle diameter of ≤3.0 μm, an Al2O3 source of ≤2.0 μm and kaolin, calcined kaolin and/or silica having a particle diameter of 2.0 μm in an amount of 35 wt.%, and, if necessary, a spinel-containing material together with a vehicle and an auxiliary agent to form a plastic mixture, molding and drying the obtained unbaked mixture, and then baking the dried molded product at a temp. of 1,370-1,435°C. The temperature-elevating rate from 1,150°C to 1,275°C on the baking is adjusted based on the particle sizes of the raw materials and to the weight ratio of the raw materials to all the raw materials. Thus, the cordierite body which has a thermal expansion coefficient of ≤4×10-7°C-1 at temperatures of 25-800°C and at least whose 85% has sizes of 0.5-5.0 μm is obtained.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
