PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely measure the concn. of chemicals for water treatment added to water in an easy and rapid manner by adding a specified coloring material as a tracer as well as the chemicals to the water and optically detecting the concn. of the coloring material in the water. ;SOLUTION: A known amt. of a water-soluble light resistant coloring material as a tracer as well as a known amt. of chemicals for water treatment is added to water such as open system cooling water and the concn. of the coloring material in the water is optically detected by measurement at two or more wavelengths including at least one wavelength at which the absorption of the coloring material occurs, preferably by absorptiometry. The concn. of the chemicals for water treatment present in the water is quantified from the detected concn. of the coloring material proportional to the known amt. of the chemicals and the concn. of the chemicals added to the water is controlled.
