PURPOSE:To obtain the subject lightweight hollow polymer particles which are polymer particles having hollow pores and a specific outside diameter at a specific pH providing a precipitation point with good opacity and gloss and useful as a pigment component for coating paper or various coatings. CONSTITUTION:The objective hollow polymer particles, obtained by swelling 100 pts.wt. polymer particles with 0.1-5 pts.wt. cationic emulsifying agent (e.g. laurylamine) according to two-stage emulsion polymerization, forming core/shell type polymer particles having a core, subjecting the resultant particles to expansion treatment and, as necessary, removing treatment of an inert liquid and having 0.05-100mum outside diameter and hollow pores with a diameter of 1-99% based on the aforementioned outside diameter at pH3-9 providing a precipitation point. The above-mentioned hollow polymer particles in an amount of 0.1-50wt.% are contained in an inorganic filler to afford a paper coating composition.
