PURPOSE: To gather, without digging a hole by motive power, a geological sample of a body surface in a celestial body except the earth. ;CONSTITUTION: A penetrator 4 of large length is mounted in a downward direction to a bottom surface of a landing vehicle 2 which can be landed on the surf ace of the moon 1 or the like. An opening 5 is provided in a side wall of the penetrator 4. A lift frame 7 is liftably provided in the penetrator 4. A sample collecting box 9, having a sample gathering hollow drill 10 in the front surface, is supported movably in the longitudinal direction to the lift frame 7. When the landing vehicle 2 is landed on the surface of the moon or the like 1, simultaneously the penetrator 4 is thrusted into the ground. When the hollow drill 10 is protruded to the outside through the opening 5 in a suitable position by advancing the sample collecting box 9, a geological sample can be gathered by digging a stratum.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO&Japio
