The present invention concerns materials and processes for the diagnosis and treatment of pre-eclampsia and, more particularly, the role of type P inositolphosphoglycans (IPGs) in the occurrence of pre-eclampsia. Processes for diagnosing pre-eclampsia by determining the level of type P IPGs and the uses of type P IPG antagonists in the treatment of pre-eclampsia are presented, along with a process for examining type P IPG antagonists.
