A composite dental material includes a matrix of curable resin and filler component. The filling component comprises (a) an initial plurality of glass particles preferably having an average particle size of about 1 to 10 micrometers; (b) a second plurality of glass particles preferably having an average particle size of about 0,1 to 1 micrometer;and (c) a plurality of filling particles having an average particle size about 0,01 to about 0,04 micrometer. A process according to invention includes compacting a composite dental material into a prepared tooth cavity, and that the material has a compactability index above about 300 g/m2.
