A food additive useful for lowering serum cholesterol in humans contains an ester of esterol or stanol from a fatty acid or an ester of dicarboxylic acid from a sterol or stanol made by the reaction of a sterol, stanol and carboxylic acid in the presence of an effective amount of a selected catalyst from a group consisting of calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, calcium salt from a carboxylic acid,magnesium hydroxide and combinations thereof described here.
