Use of a particulate carrier to crystallise or take up ferric hydroxide formed during chemical oxidation of effluent water using ferrous ion and hydrogen peroxide in a fluidised bed reactor is new. Process for the chemical oxidation of effluent water with reduced sludge formation, comprises intimately mixing the contaminated waste water with Fenton's Reagent comprising Fe(II) ions and H2O2 in a fluidised bed reactor which is provided with a suitable particulate carrier selected such that the Fe(III) compounds formed crystallise or become coated exclusively onto the carrier during the mixing, and then removing the treated effluent water from the reactor.
