Material is subjected to an extrusion process, where it is passed through thermally distinct zones with different temperatures. A method for subjecting a material with an organic content to a phased heat treatment in order to generate a cracking effect to produce products with a lower molecular weight, comprises an extrusion process where the material is passed through thermally distinct zones with different temperatures. Independent claims are also included for: (a) an identical method for treating a material with an inorganic content; and (b) the process apparatus, comprising an extruder with at least one inlet, a cylindrical mantle and at least one screw.
