In trailers which have a mechanical braking system operated when the towing vehicle slows down there is a delay between the operation of the towing vehicle's brakes and those of the trailer. The present trailer has an electrical system which operates the trailer's brakes at the same time as the towing vehicle's. The wiring (19) from the vehicle system to the actuator (22) is via the lighting socket on the tow-bar. The actuator pulls the operating rod (16) to apply the brakes (5).
