A black edible flat film based on collagen with a wall thickness of up to 40 microns that comprises (a) a collagen substrate, and (b) at least one black pigment and the concentration of said pigment is between 2% and 40% by weight based on dry collagen in order to meet the requirements of suppleness and non-transparency. These films are useful in the manufacture of foodstuffs having a black outer coating.
