Method of reducing allograft transplant rejection by contacting donor tissue with photosensitizing agent followed by light

A method for diminishing the immunogenicity of donor tissue containing antigen presenting cells (APC's) is claimed comprising: a) contacting the donor tissue with a photosensitizing agent in a therapeutically effective amount of less than 6mg/ml to obtain a modified donor tissue; b) exposing the modified donor tissue to light having a wavelength absorbed by the photosensitizing agent for a time sufficient to attenuate the APC's in the donor tissue wherein the exposed donor tissue reduces the rejection of allografts comprising the tissue.
